"Flipped Classrooms"

A brand new concept developed by a school in the Detroit, MI area: Flipped Classrooms. How it works is instead of the student doing "Homework" at home, they're going to do the learning via video-recorded lectures/training from instructors. Now the student is going to do homework AT school where they can seek help. Now being an instructor at a Jr. College for almost 20 years, I can honestly say that most people Learn AND Retain 'teachings' when they do it themselves. So with this concept, the student listens/watches the lecture on their time when they want. Then at school within the next few days do the homework with instructor's help. Homework is when a lot of the lecture/training really 'sinks in', because of re-enforcement. So now that we're moving more and more to on-line classes at the college level, which is more like "self-study" college, now we can provide the means to give training via recorded lecture/training. Now the on-line student is receiving the same lecture/training as the in-class student. Let's take it one-step further: With most all of the laptops today come with a built in web cam and microphone, why couldn't an instructor hold class on-line via web cams. Students could log into the class and view the instructor on their computer. The instructor could see all of the students (as thumbnails) on their screen, and answer questions. So now we have a classroom setting, but on-line and student/instructor could be on other sides of the world. Not only would students have more available for them to fit their needs, but savings in gas traveling to school, no classroom is needed, so no heating/air-conditioning, lighting, equipment (PC's, software, maintenance, lab equip, etc.), etc. would be needed. There could be a virtual "University" with NO brick-and-mortar buildings...no need for Cap and Gown for the formal graduation.

We didn't make the MOOKAR trip this year because a few days before we planned to go on the trip they were calling for 103 degrees for three days on the trip. So the DAY BEFORE the trip, I sat down with Judy and we planned a NEW trip. We looked on line for routes (LOTS of websites out there, and I put a few on our Wild Hawgs website). We found one that went down the Natchez-Trace parkway and into New Orleans. We checked the weather and it didn't look too hot, so that's what we decided. So the next day we were Nashville bound. It was all interstate to Nashville, but a good ride. We stayed a Super 8 that had a hot breakfast. The next day we got on the Natchez-Trace parkway which is a Federal Park with a 45mph, no stop signs, no pot-holes, very little traffic, sweeping curves, and lots of shade. There are also a LOT of pull-offs to see a lot of historical sites (Meriwether Lewis of Lewis and Clark died and is buried on the Natchez-Trace pkwy). We were only planning on going as far as Jackson, MS, but Judy asked if we went farther, we would have more of a Beach Day the next day (we were planning to get to Longbeach, MS). So we drove the full 444 miles of the Natchez-Trace pkwy. I'd ride that road again and again....I loved it! The next day we rode down into the Bayou, were all the houses are on blocks and the graves are all above ground. We stopped at McDonald's and the accents were awesome! We even heard some cajun on the CB. We rode to New Orlens and stopped at the HD dealer where it was 113 heat index. They could see we were very uncomfortable, and put us in a comfortable lounge, gave us soda and went far and above friendly service!!!! We purchased "Chilly Pads" that are towels you can get wet and they hold A LOT of water for a LONG time to put around our necks and they kept us very cool (Judy would put them in the cooler with the ice and sode, so when we put them on it was, "ahhhhhhh"). We then went across the 24 mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge. And then to Longbeach, MS. We put on our suits and headed to the white sandy beaches only to find the nastiest, yucky, brown slimy water you'd ever seen. Come to find out, this is NOT the gulf, but the Mississippi Sound; which is where the Mississipi river empies into the gulf. SO no beach day. The next day we headed North through Mississippi and we stayed in Arkasas and the next day home. It was a great ride with my sweetee, and I'd gladly do it again!!!!!

2011 Riding Season

Well it looks like the start of the Motorcycle riding season. Already we can't make TWO major rides that our friends are putting together. One is our annual Smoky Mountains trip, which I LOVE!!!! The next is a trip to Colorado. My mom-in-law lost both her mom and husband within the last 18 months, and she'd been taking care of them up until their deaths, so now she's ready to LIVE. Which is great, but the bad news is she's our babysitter, and she's gonna be gone during those two trips. We're going to try and do a couple trips over about 5 to 6 days each, one is our MOOKAR trip (MO-Missouri, OK-Oklahoma, AR-Arkansas).

Keep the rubber side down!

Motorcycles triggering traffic lights

It looks as though when they install those wire loops in the intersections at an angle, they'll sense two-wheeled vehicles.  But there is in IL legislation a bill to allow two-wheeled vehicles to go on red-light.  If this passes, I wonder how many cycles will "blow" red lights?  It will be a tough ticket for a cop to write......

Bank robber slips on Ice....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YByWcgnfngA
I'm amazed at this youtube video of the guy who robbed the bank, and took a woman outside as a hostage with a gun to her head.  The ink bomb goes off on the money he is carrying, so the money is worthless from this point.  He slips on the ice, and she's able to run away and into a pathway with armed officers on BOTH sides with in a few feet.  This poor S.O.B. then runs after her (it doesn't look like he's trying to shoot her, but just trying to get her as a hostage again).  Since he had a gun and it was pointed in the direction of the hostage (he wasn't aiming), the cops opened fired and killed this 'would-be' bank-robber.  The police in my opinion were TOTALLY in the right in shooting.

If he would have just stopped, put his gun down, he'd be alive and in jail.  I just wonder what was going through this guy's brain (besides lead from a bullet), and what was his motivation to run after a woman with a gun in his hand in between armed officers within a few feet........?!?

It was probably drug related, but I have to think of this guy's family having to watch this video showing him being shot and killed on the 5 o'clock news.
